Where it came from
Sprinting Warbrute was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set, the final installment in the Khans of Tarkir block for Magic: The Gathering. This set depicted an alternate timeline where the dragonlords had triumphed over the clan leaders, fundamentally altering the world's power structure. The card reflects the aggressive, combat-focused nature of the Mardu brood, showcasing the red-aligned forces that defined the high-speed, high-impact gameplay style prevalent throughout the block.
The illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who captured the frenetic energy and raw power of the warbrute through a dynamic, forward-charging composition. Designed as a common-rarity creature with the dash mechanic, the card was intended to provide reliable, efficient pressure in limited environments. Upon release, it was well-regarded by players for its ability to enable early-game aggression, serving as a quintessential example of the set’s emphasis on proactive, combat-oriented creature design.
