Provenance

Where it came from

Springsage Ritual was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set served as the conclusion to the Shadows over Innistrad block, a narrative arc defined by a gothic horror atmosphere corrupted by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's themes of survival and communal resilience, allowing players to gain life based on the number of creatures they controlled during the escalating madness of the storyline.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Ben Maier, who contributed several pieces to the set. Maier’s visual approach captures the frantic, ritualistic nature of the survivors of Thraben attempting to restore order to their blighted landscape. The piece is highly regarded for its stark, evocative lighting and its ability to condense the desperate, communal struggle of the Innistrad setting into a single, compact composition.
