Where it came from
Squad Commander was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare creature card featuring the party mechanic, it was designed to reward players for gathering a diverse group of adventurers—specifically clerics, rogues, warriors, and wizards—to bolster their board presence. The card was specifically highlighted as a promo version, often distributed through promotional kits or events associated with the set's release.
The art was crafted by Johannes Voss, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his expressive, fantasy-driven aesthetic. The design reflects the high-adventure tone of the Zendikar plane, emphasizing the commander's role in rallying troops. Upon its introduction, the card was well-received by players focusing on tribal and party-themed decks in the Commander format, where its ability to create tokens and distribute power based on party size provided a reliable utility.
