Where it came from
Squad Commander was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a supplemental product designed for the Commander format that integrates elements of Dungeons & Dragons lore into the Magic: The Gathering mechanics. The card was specifically crafted to support the 'party' mechanic, a thematic feature that rewards players for building a board state with specific creature types—Cleric, Rogue, Warrior, and Wizard—thereby mirroring the collaborative nature of a traditional tabletop role-playing adventure.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a bold, heroic aesthetic to depict the Commander leading their charges into battle. The design prioritizes synergistic gameplay, allowing the card to act as both an army-wide buff and a protective measure against mass removal effects. Upon its release, the card was received as a staple utility piece for tribal or party-themed decks, appreciated by players for its ability to stabilize a board presence in the often chaotic environment of multiplayer Commander games.
