Where it came from
Squad Commander was released as part of the Zendikar Rising set in late 2020, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its adventurous, land-focused mechanics and chaotic, shifting landscape. The card was designed to support the 'party' mechanic, a thematic centerpiece of the expansion that rewarded players for assembling a group of creatures consisting of a cleric, rogue, warrior, and wizard.
The art for the card features a Kor commander rallying troops, emphasizing the tactical leadership roles present in the set's design. Illustrated by Greg Staples, the piece captures the high-fantasy aesthetic signature to the Magic: The Gathering brand. It was received as a functional, aggressive staple for White-aligned decks in the Commander format, where its ability to create a board state and bolster allies fits well with the collaborative nature of that play style.
