Where it came from
The Staff of Eden, Vault's Key card appeared as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Universes Beyond' collaboration with the Assassin's Creed franchise. Released in 2024, the set was designed to translate the historical fiction and high-concept science fiction elements of the video game series into the mechanics of a collectible card game, specifically highlighting the Pieces of Eden that serve as catalysts for the series' overarching conflict.
The illustration for the card reflects the aesthetic established by Ubisoft's art direction, focusing on the mysterious, precursor-tech appearance of the staff. Within the game, the item represents the powerful artifacts left behind by the Isu, a precursor civilization, and in the card game, it functions as an artifact that mirrors its ability in the source material to influence or control, providing players with strategic utility consistent with the franchise's lore.
