Lore

Why it matters

This card creates a tense, psychological standoff where players must weigh the cost of playing spells against the risk of replenishing an opponent's hand. As an uncommon inclusion in its set, it serves as a classic example of a design that forces a deliberate, calculated pace of play at the table.

Provenance

Where it came from

Standstill was originally released in the 2001 Odyssey expansion, designed as an enchantment that forces players into a tense stalemate by rewarding the first person to break the silence with a card-draw advantage. It was envisioned by the design team as a political tool for multiplayer formats and a cornerstone of control decks, relying on its iconic, minimalist mechanical structure to dictate the pace of the game.

This particular version from Mystery Booster 2 features the classic art by Jeff Miracola, which captures the eerie, suspended animation of the card's effect. The Mystery Booster series is known for its playtest-heavy, archive-style approach, and the inclusion of this card in the second iteration reflects its enduring status as a cult favorite among players who appreciate high-skill, psychological gameplay.
