Where it came from
Standstill originated as part of the IDW Comics inserts, a promotional series designed to bridge the gap between the immersive world of Magic: The Gathering and the narrative depth of comic book storytelling. These cards were distributed alongside specific comic issues, serving as both a functional game piece and a collectible artifact for fans of the franchise’s expanding lore.
The card’s design reflects the distinct aesthetic sensibilities common to early 2000s expansion sets, emphasizing atmospheric, surrealist imagery to convey the enchantment’s core mechanic of stillness and reactive punishment. While the artwork was produced within the broader IDW collaborative effort, it remains a hallmark of the period's attempt to unify the card game's mechanics with the serialized visual language of the comic medium.
