Where it came from
The Stargaze card is part of the Mystical Archive, a special subset of cards released within the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Strixhaven: School of Mages. Wizards of the Coast designed this set to celebrate the game's history of instants and sorceries, featuring cards from across the game's lifespan reprinted with a unique, luxurious frame style inspired by the aesthetic of the Strixhaven campus.
The art for this specific iteration was crafted to evoke the scholarly, magical atmosphere of the setting. It was conceptualized by the Wizards of the Coast design team to feel like a high-end, collectable archival document, utilizing the distinct 'Mystical Archive' border treatment that emphasizes gold filigree and stained-glass sensibilities. Upon release, the set was widely praised by the player community for its cohesive artistic vision and for providing a visually unified way to collect powerful, iconic spells.
