Where it came from
Starving Revenant is a card featured in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It was created by Wizards of the Coast as part of a thematic expansion centered on a subterranean, prehistoric world inspired by Mesoamerican cultures. Mechanically, the card serves as a black-aligned creature that utilizes the set's graveyard-centric synergies, reflecting the themes of life, death, and exploration prevalent throughout the Ixalan storyline.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to emphasize the creature's ghostly and decaying appearance. In the context of the set's design, the Revenant was intended to provide players with a mid-game tool for card advantage, balancing its spectral flavor with functional utility. It was received as a solid inclusion in Limited play environments, often praised for how its visual design contributes to the set's overarching aesthetic of dark, ancient tomb-raiding.
