Where it came from
The Starving Revenant was released in late 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The set returned players to the plane of Ixalan, a Mesoamerican-inspired world characterized by deep jungles, subterranean caverns, and factions centered around vampires, pirates, and dinosaurs. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's graveyard-focused themes, specifically rewarding players for managing their resources through self-milling and graveyard interaction.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who leaned into the dark, eerie aesthetic of Ixalan’s vampire civilization. The design intent was to capture a sense of restless hunger, manifesting in the card's ability to manipulate the top of the deck to fuel its own power. Upon its release, it was recognized as a solid utility creature for limited play environments, noted by the community for its efficient synergy within black-aligned graveyard strategies.
