Where it came from
Starving Revenant was released in 2023 as part of the promotional suite for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a Magic: The Gathering expansion that revisited the Mesoamerican-inspired plane of Ixalan. This specific card, designated with collector number 123p, was issued as a promotional variant, typically distributed through specialized event play or retail incentives associated with the set's release.
The art was commissioned to emphasize the gothic and subterranean horror themes central to the set's 'Lost Caverns' narrative. Like many modern Magic promotional cards, the design utilizes unique border treatments or foil-etching techniques to distinguish it from the standard core set version. It was designed to cater to players seeking thematic completion and aesthetic variety, reflecting the broader industry trend of producing collectible variants for high-engagement TCG expansions.
