Steamflogger of the Month

Steamflogger of the Month was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a humorous nod to the long-running community joke regarding 'Steamflogger Boss,' a card from the 2007 Future Sight set that referenced 'Riggers' and 'Contraptions' without providing any way to utilize them for a decade. By the time Unstable was developed, lead designer Mark Rosewater incorporated the long-awaited Contraption mechanic to finally fulfill the thematic promise suggested years earlier.

The artwork was illustrated by Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the Un-sets. The card serves as a satirical 'employee of the month' portrait, poking fun at corporate tropes while providing mechanical synergy for Rigger creatures. It was received by the player base as a cathartic conclusion to an inside joke, cementing its place in the game's history as a meta-commentary on the development process itself.
