Where it came from
The Stocking Tiger, designated as card number 13† in the Happy Holidays set, emerged during a mid-to-late 20th-century trend of collectible greeting cards and illustrated holiday ephemera. Designed to evoke a sense of whimsical nostalgia, the piece reflects the era's focus on anthropomorphic animal illustrations, a style popularized by artists who sought to blend traditional festive imagery with playful, domestic settings.
The illustration was crafted to highlight the tiger—an unconventional subject for a winter holiday theme—tucked into a oversized stocking. This creative choice aimed to surprise the recipient and break away from more conventional iconography like reindeer or snowmen. Upon release, the set received modest praise for its distinct color palette and clean lines, eventually finding a dedicated niche among collectors who prioritize seasonal charm and unique artistic character.
