Where it came from
Stolen by the Fae was released as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion in late 2019, a set heavily inspired by European folklore and Arthurian legend. The card was featured as a promo item, reflecting the set's aesthetic focus on the duality of the fairy tale genre—alternating between whimsical wonder and darker, more predatory undertones. Its design mechanics, which allow for the bouncing of creatures, mirror the capricious and often disruptive nature of faerie mythology central to the set's design.
The artwork for this specific promo iteration was crafted to emphasize the mysterious atmosphere of the Eldraine wilderness. Illustrators for the set worked under the creative direction of Wizards of the Coast to move away from high-fantasy tropes toward a more distinct, vibrant storybook visual language. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various control-oriented deck archetypes, praised by the community for its efficient utility and thematic alignment with the set's iconic faerie creatures.
