Where it came from
Wishclaw Talisman was introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Throne of Eldraine. The set drew heavily from European folklore and Arthurian legend, aiming to blend high fantasy tropes with the whimsy and dark underlying currents of classic fairy tales. This specific artifact, featuring art by Dmitry Burmak, was designed as a mechanically unique mana-efficient tutor, playing into the flavor of a cursed object that grants a desire at a steep, treacherous cost.
As part of the Throne of Eldraine Promos, this version was distributed through organized play channels, such as Friday Night Magic events. The design reflects the 'bargain' mechanic found throughout the set, where players trade long-term control of the board for short-term power. The card was well-received by the competitive community for its versatility in combo-oriented decks, despite the inherent risk of handing a powerful card to an opponent.
