Provenance

Where it came from

Storm Crow was originally printed in the 1996 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Alliances. Developed during a period of rapid growth for the game, the set focused on complex mechanics and expanded the lore of the Dominaria plane. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature to provide utility for blue-aligned decks, specifically filling the role of an efficient, flying threat that could be played early in a match.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Heather Hudson, who was a prolific contributor to early Magic sets. Her design leaned into the gothic, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in mid-90s trading card games, depicting the crow as a portentous and magical entity. While initially regarded as a standard staple, the card eventually gained a cult following within the community, primarily due to the humorous discrepancy between its modest mechanical stats and the hyperbolic praise fans jokingly heaped upon it in online forums.
