Where it came from
Storm Herald was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the Greek-mythology-inspired plane of Theros, specifically exploring themes of the underworld, death, and the return of gods. The card was designed to embody the chaotic, lightning-charged nature of the setting, serving as a creature that synergizes with the game's enchantment mechanics by retrieving discarded auras from the graveyard to bolster its own power.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, a seasoned artist for the game known for his dramatic lighting and high-fantasy aesthetic. Baga depicted the Herald mid-stride amidst a turbulent, electrified landscape, intending to convey the swift and destructive energy of a storm god's servant. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its potential in aggressive deck archetypes, particularly for its ability to create sudden, overwhelming board states in late-game scenarios.
