Where it came from
Stormbind was originally released in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield and his team to introduce complex, graveyard-based interactions to the game. The specific version in the Pro Tour Collector Set, numbered mj304, was part of a limited-edition box set released in 1997. This set was designed to commemorate the professional tournament circuit of the era, offering players a way to own high-profile, tournament-viable cards with unique commemorative gold-bordering that distinguished them from standard-issue deck cards.
The art for the card was created by illustrators who were instrumental in defining the high-fantasy aesthetic of the early game's mid-90s era. Stormbind was designed to function as a powerful utility engine, allowing players to convert excess land cards into direct damage. Upon its release, it became a staple in aggressive red-green strategies, well-regarded for its tactical versatility in shifting the momentum of competitive matches. The Pro Tour Collector Set version remains a significant piece of history for collectors who focus on the transition of the game into a structured, professional sport.
