Provenance

Where it came from

Stormbind was originally released as a rare enchantment in the 1996 Magic: The Gathering set Mirage. The Oversized League Prize version, numbered 64, was produced later as a promotional item for players participating in organized play leagues. These oversized cards were designed to be tactile, impressive rewards that celebrated the aesthetic of the game beyond the standard deck-sized format.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists in the early history of the game. His design sought to capture the volatile, elemental power of a magical storm being tethered by a spellcaster. Upon its introduction, the card was well-regarded for its unique mechanical utility, which allowed players to discard cards to deal direct damage, a design choice that became a hallmark of red-green deck archetypes during that era.
