Where it came from
Strategic Planning was originally introduced in the Portal Three Kingdoms set in 1999, drawing thematic inspiration from the historical events of the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. As part of a set designed to introduce new players to Magic: The Gathering through simplified mechanics and flavor-rich storytelling, the card was intended to capture the tactical essence of military deliberation.
The version from Commander Legends, featuring collector number 101, showcases the card’s transition into the modern Commander format. The artwork was crafted by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a bold, sweeping aesthetic to emphasize the gravity of a general's choice. Upon its inclusion in this set, it was well-received by players for its efficient utility in filtering decks, finding a consistent place in blue-aligned Commander strategies.
