Where it came from
Strategic Planning was originally printed in the Portal Second Age set in 1998, but the version from Hour of Devastation, released in July 2017, features updated art that aligns with the set's desert-themed setting. This card was designed as a blue sorcery that allows players to look at the top three cards of their library, put one into their hand, and place the others into the graveyard, serving as a classic utility tool for card selection and graveyard synergy.
The art for this specific printing was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned fantasy artist known for her evocative portrayals of Magic: The Gathering characters and landscapes. Her design for this piece captures the tension of the Nicol Bolas storyline, utilizing a muted, arid color palette that reflects the desolation of Amonkhet. Upon its release in the Hour of Devastation set, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats and its versatility in Constructed decks that require graveyard interaction.
