Where it came from
Stress Dream was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card belongs to the Archives subset, a collection of legendary spells from the game's history designed to represent the vast library of Strixhaven University. Mechanically, it functions as a sorcery that rewards players for filling their graveyards with specific card types, reflecting the academic and often chaotic pursuit of knowledge found within the setting.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on the visceral experience of academic anxiety. His design emphasizes a figure overwhelmed by swirling, fragmented arcane scripts and manifestations of mental exhaustion. The art was well-received for its evocative depiction of the 'stress' theme, successfully capturing the thematic blend of high-fantasy academia and psychological pressure intended by the Wizards of the Coast design team.
