Where it came from
Striding Shotcaller // Run the Play was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set in 2021. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, this card features a double-faced mechanic that reflects the academic and tactical themes of Strixhaven University. The card was crafted to support strategies centered around the Lorehold college, emphasizing the interaction between graveyard resources and board presence.
The art and design were developed by the internal teams at Wizards of the Coast to fit the distinct aesthetic of the Strixhaven plane, which blends classic high-fantasy tropes with collegiate motifs. The card's design focus on synergy and versatility was well-received by players seeking utility-heavy spells for multiplayer formats, establishing it as a staple for deck-builders focused on archaeological and recursive mechanics.
