Strip Mine

Strip Mine was released in 1994 as part of Antiquities, the second expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore themes of archaeology and the remnants of an ancient civilization, introducing mechanical concepts that focused on resource management and land manipulation. The card was created during a period when the game's balance was still evolving, leading to its inclusion as a powerful utility card that allowed players to destroy any land on the battlefield.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Daniel Gelon, one of the original artists involved in the game’s early development. Gelon’s design for the 82a version features a stark, desolate landscape reflecting the industrial excavation themes pervasive throughout the Antiquities set. Upon its release, Strip Mine became a defining card in competitive play due to its efficiency and disruptive potential, eventually leading to its restriction or banning in various tournament formats as players recognized that its ability to systematically dismantle an opponent's mana base provided an overwhelming tactical advantage.
