Where it came from
Strip Mine was originally introduced in the Antiquities expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1994, designed by Christopher Rush. The card gained immediate notoriety for its extreme power level, as its ability to destroy any land card without a mana cost restriction significantly disrupted the competitive landscape and forced fundamental changes to how decks were built in the game's early years.
The Pro Tour Collector Set, released in 1997, served as a curated retrospective of the most influential cards from the game's first few years of tournament play. These versions featured a gold-bordered back, distinguishing them from standard tournament-legal cards, and were intended as commemorative items rather than game pieces. The reprint maintained the iconic original artwork while serving as a museum-like tribute to the card's history and its controversial impact on the game's evolution.
