What it does
Destroy target nonland permanent. Its controller creates a 1/1 white Human creature token.
The assembled partygoers fell silent and stared. As the helmet came to a clattering stop, the only sound was Ash's distant footsteps.

Where it came from
Stroke of Midnight was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic successor to earlier 'flexible removal' spells, serving as a white-aligned answer to problematic permanents. By allowing the player to exile a target non-land permanent in exchange for giving its controller a 1/1 white Spirit creature token, it follows the color pie tradition of granting opponents a small consolation prize in return for the versatility of the effect.
The card features illustration by Dominik Mayer, whose work is characterized by dramatic lighting, high-contrast silhouettes, and a distinctively gothic, stylized aesthetic. In the context of the Eldraine plane—a setting inspired by fairy tales and high fantasy—the art depicts a somber, magical transformation that fits the card’s name. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its utility in both competitive and casual formats, becoming a staple tool for white decks looking to handle diverse threats.
