Where it came from
Stroke of Midnight was introduced in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander set as a versatile white removal spell. Its design reflects the mechanical philosophy of modern Magic: The Gathering, where white is granted 'catch-all' answers that compensate the opponent, in this case by providing them with a 2/2 white Spirit creature token. This design choice addresses the color pie's historical struggle to interact with non-creature permanents while maintaining balance through a tactical drawback.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who illustrated the spell with a dramatic, ethereal aesthetic to match its name. The imagery of a crumbling clock tower perfectly captures the theme of a fleeting, final moment of impact. Within the player community, the card is recognized for its functional utility, serving as a staple in Commander formats for its ability to exile problematic threats at instant speed regardless of their card type.
