Where it came from
Stroke of Midnight was introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Foundations, released in 2024. Designed as a versatile removal spell, it serves as a foundational piece of the white color identity within the game, allowing players to deal with problematic nonland permanents by replacing them with a token. Its creation reflects Wizards of the Coast's ongoing effort to provide flexible, answer-oriented cards that fit into a wide variety of deck archetypes.
The card's art, rendered with dramatic flair, captures the quintessential theme of time-sensitive transformation. Illustrators for the Foundations set were tasked with creating imagery that felt timeless yet distinct, ensuring the spell felt impactful during gameplay. Upon its inclusion in the set, the card was received by the community as a reliable utility staple, praised for its efficiency and its ability to act as a universal safety valve in diverse game formats.
