Stromgald Cabal

Stromgald Cabal was originally introduced in the Alliances expansion set in 1996, serving as a rare black creature card that reflected the grim, gothic aesthetic of the Ice Age block. It features a unique ability that allows it to counter white spells by sacrificing a creature, a thematic nod to the dark, subversive nature of the villainous cult depicted in the card's lore.

The art for this version was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, whose work during Magic: The Gathering’s early years helped define the game's dark fantasy visual identity. When it was reprinted in the Classic Sixth Edition set in 1999, it retained its original illustration, marking a transition period where the game’s core rules were being overhauled while maintaining the artistic consistency of its formative years.
