Provenance

Where it came from

Submerge was released in 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Masquerian block, Nemesis focused on themes of political intrigue and rebellion, set against the backdrop of the plane of Rath. The card was designed as a blue instant, serving as a tactical tool to disrupt an opponent's creature-based strategy by forcing them to place a green creature on top of their library, effectively slowing their tempo and neutralizing board presence.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by rk post, a prolific contributor to the game during this era. Known for a distinct, often moody and atmospheric style, post's illustration for Submerge emphasizes the card's theme of oceanic displacement and elemental force. Upon release, the card gained significant recognition within tournament play, eventually becoming a staple in various formats due to its efficiency as a countermeasure against green decks in competitive sideboards.
