Where it came from
Parallax Wave was released in the year 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare enchantment, it was designed to showcase the set's central 'fading' mechanic, which forced players to sacrifice the card after a set number of turns. It served as a strategic centerpiece for players looking to temporarily exile their own creatures to save them from removal or to remove opponent threats from the battlefield.
The card’s haunting, ethereal aesthetic was crafted by illustrator Adam Rex. His design captured the concept of a shifting, unstable reality, reflecting the chaotic narrative of the Rath overlay event taking place in the game's lore at that time. Upon its release, it was recognized for its high power level in competitive formats, eventually becoming a staple in combo-oriented decks that sought to exploit its ability to trigger enter-the-battlefield effects repeatedly.
