Suffocating Fumes

Suffocating Fumes was released in 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. The set focused on a plane dominated by massive monsters, with a thematic emphasis on the bond between human inhabitants and the creatures they mutated alongside. As a black-aligned spell, this card reflects the set's cycle of cycle-based mechanics, allowing players to discard the card to cycle through their deck while simultaneously acting as a defensive board wipe meant to mitigate the threat of small, aggressive creatures.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Bryan Sola, who aimed to depict the pervasive, toxic nature of the magical smog engulfing the landscape of Ikoria. The design highlights the set's darker aesthetic, emphasizing the hazardous environment that forced the plane's inhabitants to adapt to survive. Upon its release, it was recognized by players as a functional utility piece in the Limited format, praised for its versatility in handling aggressive token strategies while maintaining consistency through its cycling ability.
