Where it came from
Surge Engine was released as part of the 2022 expansion The Brothers' War, a set designed to evoke the high-fantasy industrial conflict between Urza and Mishra that defined the early lore of Magic: The Gathering. As a mechanical centerpiece representing the complex, artifact-heavy nature of the war, the card was produced in a promotional variant for the set, distinguished by its unique collector numbering and distinct aesthetic presentation intended to highlight its role as a versatile, scaling threat.
The design of the card, and its corresponding promotional variant, reflects the game's tradition of artifact creature design where utility and progression are prioritized. Illustrators for the set were tasked with capturing a retro-futuristic aesthetic consistent with the expansion's themes of ancient machinery and wartime invention. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency and late-game utility, solidifying its place as a staple within competitive formats utilizing artifact synergies.
