Where it came from
Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim was released as part of the promotional set for the 2022 expansion The Brothers' War, which revisited the pivotal historical conflict between Urza and Mishra within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This specific card represents the character Teferi during his narrative involvement in the timeline, capturing his essence as a master of time magic. The card design leans into the thematic aesthetic of the set, utilizing a showcase frame style intended to evoke the mechanical, industrial motifs central to the Brothers' War storyline.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game whose work is characterized by ethereal lighting and emotional resonance. In this depiction, Voss aimed to emphasize Teferi's introspective nature as a temporal traveler navigating a crumbling past. Upon its release, the card was received as a significant mechanical addition to blue-aligned control decks, drawing praise for both its strategic versatility in Commander formats and the artistic quality of its special promotional framing.
