Where it came from
The 'Surprise!' front card is part of the Foundations Jumpstart set, released by Wizards of the Coast to streamline the onboarding experience for new Magic: The Gathering players. These front cards serve as thematic identifiers for the fixed-deck packs, providing a playful introduction to the mechanical identity of the Jumpstart format, which allows players to shuffle two packs together for an immediate gameplay experience.
The design of the 'Surprise!' card reflects the whimsical and chaotic nature of red-aligned gameplay, utilizing vibrant, high-energy imagery consistent with the game's modern art direction. It was crafted by the Magic creative team to serve as a recognizable visual anchor, intended to pique curiosity and signal the deck's explosive, unpredictable playstyle to both veteran collectors and newcomers alike.
