Where it came from
Surprise, Nerd!, cataloged as RB05b, originates from an unidentified promotional event or limited-run series. Items within this designation typically emerge from independent artist collectives or niche tabletop gaming events where small-batch, serialized card releases are used as commemorative tokens or humorous meta-commentary on collector culture.
The design of this piece leans into the self-aware, ironic aesthetic popular in early 2010s internet subcultures. By adopting the visual lexicon of collectible trading cards, the creators aimed to subvert the seriousness of the hobby, framing the act of collecting itself as the punchline. Given its obscure origins, it was likely produced as a tongue-in-cheek gift for event attendees rather than for widespread commercial distribution.
