Where it came from
Surprise Party was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast's 'Un-' series. Designed for casual and novelty play, these sets are known for breaking standard mechanical conventions to prioritize humor and interactive social experiences, moving away from the traditional black-bordered tournament legal rules in favor of the silver-bordered or acorn-stamped format.
The card's design features whimsical, expressive artwork by artist Titus Lunter, who captures the chaotic energy of a literal surprise party. The card functions as a mechanics-heavy joke based on the physical act of playing a game, requiring players to physically move around the table or interact with their environment in a manner consistent with the lighthearted, celebratory aesthetic of the entire Unfinity expansion.
