Where it came from
Exchange of Words was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth standalone expansion in the long-running 'Un-' series for Magic: The Gathering. These sets are designed to explore unconventional gameplay mechanics and humor, often featuring cards that break standard rules or interact with the physical space around the table. The card was designed to embody the chaotic and whimsical spirit characteristic of the Un-iverse, utilizing a unique text-swapping mechanic that forces players to navigate the linguistic constraints of their opponents.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Gaboleps, who adopted a surreal, vibrant aesthetic to mirror the card's reality-bending effect. The design centers on the visual representation of communication and identity, using sharp, abstract forms to emphasize the confusion of the mechanical interaction. Upon release, the card was well-received within the casual Magic community for its inventive design and the genuine, often humorous, complexity it introduces to multiplayer game states.
