Where it came from
Surrak, Elusive Hunter was released in 2015 as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm promotional series. This card was distributed as a participation reward for participants in the Dragon of Tarkir Prerelease events, serving as a foil, alternate-art version of the card originally found in the main set. The set itself marked the conclusion of the Khans of Tarkir block, a narrative arc centered on the shifting timelines and draconic influence over the world of Tarkir.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Voss focused on a more cinematic and fluid depiction of Surrak, emphasizing his role as the leader of the Temur Frontier. The illustration was designed to capture the character's prowess as a hunter in a harsh, frozen environment, and it was generally well-received by players for its dynamic composition and departure from the standard set aesthetic.
