Where it came from
Surrak, Elusive Hunter was released in the 2024 set Tarkir: Dragonstorm, serving as a reimagined version of a pivotal figure from the Tarkir block. The design draws from the established lore of the Temur Frontier, depicting Surrak during a period of transition within his clan. The card features art by Aleksi Briclot, who aimed to emphasize the character’s stoic, predatory nature and his deep connection to the savage wilderness of his homeland.
The reception of this card has been largely tied to its utility in the Commander format and its narrative significance to long-time players of the setting. By revisiting the Dragonclaw, the design team sought to balance his traditional identity as a master tracker with the mechanical evolution seen throughout the Dragonstorm storyline. It stands as a refined iteration of a fan-favorite character, grounding the high-fantasy stakes of the set in the personal history of the Tarkir clans.
