Where it came from
Suspend Aggression was originally released in the 2015 set Fate Reforged as a common red instant card. The design focus was on the mechanics of the Tarkir block, specifically highlighting the 'manifest' keyword which allowed players to turn creatures face down, representing the temporal distortions central to the narrative. It functioned primarily as a limited-format combat trick intended to punish opponents for overextending their board state during aggressive pushes.
The 236p iteration comes from the Secrets of Strixhaven promotional series, a collection of cards featuring alternate art or thematic frames released to celebrate the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. These promos were distributed through various organized play initiatives, updating the aesthetics of older cards to align with the scholarly, magical-academic visual language of the Strixhaven set. The reception among collectors focused on the prestige of the foil treatment and the novelty of seeing older spells repurposed within the new aesthetic framework of the multiverse's premier magical university.
