Svyelun of Sea and Sky // Svyelun of Sea and Sky

Svyelun of Sea and Sky was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a collection of cards designed to highlight the illustrative talent featured in the set. These cards serve as collectible, frame-less tributes to the original Magic: The Gathering artwork, stripping away the traditional gameplay borders to focus entirely on the aesthetic contribution of the artist. They were distributed in specially marked collector booster packs, intended for fans who prioritize the visual storytelling and artistry of the game over competitive play.

The original illustration for this card was created by artist Jesper Ejsing. Ejsing, a prolific contributor to the game, aimed to capture the ethereal, aquatic essence of the Merfolk deity, emphasizing light refraction through water and the regal, commanding posture of the figure. The piece was well-received by the community for its vibrant color palette and its ability to modernize the classic Merfolk aesthetic, fitting seamlessly into the high-fantasy lore of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion.
