Svyelun of Sea and Sky // Svyelun of Sea and Sky

The Modern Horizons 2 Art Series was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 as a specialized subset of the Modern Horizons 2 trading card set. These cards serve as collectible art prints rather than playable game pieces, featuring the expanded, borderless illustrations from the set's cards on the front, with the artist's name and the card title printed on the back. They were designed to highlight the intricate work of the game's illustrators, providing a canvas for the vibrant, high-fantasy aesthetics that define the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.

The artwork for Svyelun of Sea and Sky was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in fantasy art known for her expressive character work. For this piece, Villeneuve was tasked with depicting the Merfolk deity Svyelun, balancing the character's regal, divine presence with the ethereal, fluid nature of her underwater domain. Upon the release of the series, these cards were well-received by collectors who sought to appreciate the detailed composition of the game's creature designs without the distraction of card mechanics or text frames.
