Svyelun of Sea and Sky // Svyelun of Sea and Sky

Svyelun of Sea and Sky was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a specialized subset released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This series was designed to showcase the intricate illustrations from the main set in a larger, borderless format, celebrating the artistic contributions to the game rather than the functional gameplay mechanics. The card features the work of artist Magali Villeneuve, who was tasked with reimagining this iconic Merfolk deity for a contemporary audience, emphasizing ethereal lighting and the fluid, oceanic essence of the character.

Magali Villeneuve’s design for the piece focuses on a serene yet authoritative depiction of the Merfolk protector, utilizing a cool-toned color palette to evoke the depths of the sea. By removing the traditional card frame and text boxes found on standard Magic: The Gathering cards, the Art Series version allows the viewer to focus entirely on the painterly techniques and fine details of Villeneuve’s composition. The piece was well-received by collectors for its high-quality foil-etched or standard finishes, marking it as a highlight of the 2021 collector expansion.
