Where it came from
Swarm Intelligence was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focuses on the climactic battle between the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas and the Gatewatch on the plane of Amonkhet. This card specifically represents the overwhelming magical might and redundant spellcasting capabilities associated with the schemes of Nicol Bolas during the devastation of the city-state.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character work. Her design for Swarm Intelligence emphasizes the visual theme of multiplicity and overwhelming magical energy, reflecting the card's mechanical function of copying instant and sorcery spells. Upon its release, the card was widely discussed in the Commander format as a high-mana enchantment that encourages powerful, synergistic spellcasting strategies.
