Where it came from
Swarm of Bloodflies was released in the 2020 Jumpstart set, a product designed to facilitate quick, randomized play by pairing two distinct theme packs together. As part of the 'Feeth' theme, the card serves as a representative of the black mana color identity, focusing on the mechanics of sacrifice and creature growth. Its inclusion in this set was intended to provide players with a scalable flying threat that benefits from the board attrition common in Jumpstart's synergistic gameplay.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to depict the swarming insects. The design focuses on the visual representation of a coalescing mass, emphasizing the creature's ability to grow stronger as other beings perish. Upon release, it was recognized as a solid limited-format piece, praised by players for its role as an efficient engine in decks capable of generating consistent sacrifice triggers.
