Where it came from
Swarm of Locus was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique selection of cards distributed exclusively at Magic: The Gathering conventions. These cards were designed to evoke the feeling of early playtest material, featuring distinct, minimalist black-and-white layouts and placeholder-style art that deviates from standard contemporary card design. The set served as a deliberate homage to the history of the game's development process, allowing players to experience experimental mechanics that were never intended for official tournament play.
The design of the Mystery Booster playtest series is credited to the Wizards of the Coast design teams, who sought to capture the aesthetic of internal R&D documents. By stripping away the finalized art and polished graphic design of standard sets, the team aimed to highlight the underlying mechanical curiosity of the cards. Swarm of Locus represents this ethos, focusing on the raw mechanical expression of card design rather than the immersive world-building associated with traditional sets.
