Where it came from
Rona, Herald of Invasion was released as part of the March of the Machine set in 2023, representing a pivotal moment in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse narrative. This card depicts the character Rona, a former student of the Tolarian Academy, who is showcased here in a transformed state during the Phyrexians' multiversal invasion. The card was designed as a double-faced card, a hallmark of the set's focus on character transformations and shifting loyalties under pressure.
The illustration for this particular promo version emphasizes the mechanical assimilation of the character, balancing her original identity as a researcher with her new, corrupted form as a Tolarian Obliterator. The card was received by the player community as a mechanically complex engine piece, prized for its ability to trigger abilities repeatedly through its untap mechanic. The aesthetic direction aimed to capture the cold, clinical horror associated with the Phyrexian faction's integration process.
