Where it came from
The Sword of the Chosen was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card reflects the set’s focus on thematic narrative and the mechanical evolution of the game during its early years, specifically exploring the lore of the Rath plane and the conflict between the Weatherlight crew and the Phyrexians.
The card’s illustration was created by artist DiTerlizzi, whose distinct, evocative style was a hallmark of the era’s card art. The design sought to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic of the multiverse, emphasizing the artifact's role as a legendary implement of power. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, valued primarily by players exploring equipment-based strategies and graveyard-focused synergies within the limited and constructed formats of the late nineties.
